Dee Why’s Tibetan Community Swim Program

Did you know that Dee Why, in Sydney's Northern Beaches, has one of the largest Tibetan Communities in Australia?

Many Tibetan's new to our area are unfamiliar with our beaches and waterways, and have no 'water awareness'.

Water Skills for Life are committed to educating this community, who may be at risk on our beaches without proper education and training.

Water Skills for Life are working closely with the Tibetan Community of Australia to provide a program that will develop water awareness, swimming and water safety skills.

Our first swimming program commenced in July 2012 at the Warringah Aquatic Centre and has been a huge success. This first  program concluded at the end of October 2012. Part of this program included a water safety day to teach the importance of being safe in the aqautic environment.

We have since held many successful swim programs at the WAC and for the last 2 years at Terry Hills Swim Centre.

Water Skills for Life volunteers operate a swim program at Dee Why rock pool commencing in December each summer season.

As an organisation Water Skills for Life is providing an opportunity for interested people from the Tibetan community to become an instructors with Water Skills for Life. This would enable them to work closely with their own community to build confidence and knowledge around the aquatic environment. With such are large community - and a skill shortage in swim instructors versed in both cultural and language skills this project has the potential to build a knowledge and a skill base.

Through your support you are providing this community with a skill for employment.
